Thermoforming

There’s a lot that can be accomplished with solid surfaces. For example, you can make a flat surface, or you can make a rounded shape or even a 3D curve. But how is this actually accomplished? Through the ingenuity of thermoforming, the world of solid surface just got more exciting.

Preparation

Unlike natural materials such as quartz or granite, solid surface can be used in an abundance of shapes and sizes. Before thermoforming, the area or design needs to be measured. Dimensions are very important in this step as once cooled, the solid surface will actually shrink slightly as the material contracts when cooled.

Heat is the most important step in thermoforming. The entire piece of solid surface material needs to be heated. The composition of the material will determine at what temperature the heat will be at.

Process

Once heated, the solid surface material is then contracted into the desired shape. This is a slow process as any too sudden movements may result in the material breaking. On the other hand, if the process is too slow, then it can cool before being formed into the desired shape. Thermoforming requires an expert’s touch.

Cool Down

Like any hot material, sold surface will need to be cooled down before being used. This should be a gradual process. Too rapid of a temperature change can result in breaking.

Final Product

After the material has rested, any final touches are made. If there are seams, these may need to be attended to. The end result is a custom-built solid surface that will dazzle anyone.
